By using a voltage four times higher than a 12V rail, a 48V system delivers the same power with only 25% of the current. Because power loss is proportional to the square of the current (Ploss_ = I²R), this drastic reduction slashes resistive power losses by more than 50%. This significant gain means more power reaches the load instead of being wasted as heat, leading to improved system efficiency and a less complex thermal design.


Lower currents allow for the use of thinner, lighter, and less expensive copper wiring, which can reduce wire weight and cost by up to 5x for the same power delivery. This is especially critical in weight-sensitive automotive and robotics applications. Furthermore, the significant reduction in waste heat allows for smaller, more integrated thermal management solutions, enabling you to design more compact and power-dense systems.
48V architecture provides the ideal balance of power and safety. Systems operating below the 60Vdc threshold are classified as SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage), allowing you to gain the immense benefits of higher power delivery without the significant cost and complexity of high-voltage designs.
